Mechanical Design/Product Development

Andrew started his engineering career as a design assessor of boilers, pressure vessels, lifts and cranes with the old Marine Division of the Ministry of Transport. He was then engaged by NEI John Thompson Ltd, Hamilton, as a mechanical designer and project engineer. This was largely an autonomous position.

He then worked on his own account, predominantly in the dairy industry as a designer and project manager. During the mid 1990s he spent 5 years based at the Kiwi Dairies (now Fonterra) Hawera site, where he was responsible for implementing new plant utilities, including the development and implementation of new technology to purify evaporator milk condensate, suitable for re-use as process wash water.

He was also responsible for managing the mechanical and process design team related to the upgrade of plant utilities and services including the steam interface to the 60MW(e) Whareroa Cogeneration plant, the 400m long pipebridge and the centralised 20MW(e) Ammonia Refrigeration Plant.

Forensic Engineering
Andrew has led several large investigations within New Zealand industries to determine the cause of major loss of business continuity incidents. These have occurred generally due to failures of mechanical components, plant processes or fires.

A commercial pilot with over 2000hrs experience, Andrew has relevant experience as a machine operator in a highly regulated environment where safety is paramount, and an awareness of human factors a necessity. In 2000 he trained in the principles of Air Accident Investigation and Air Safety at the University of Cranfield, UK. These investigation principles have been applied in industrial investigation contexts, as well as in relation to the work undertaken for the Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC).

Project Management
Andrew is experienced in fast track and hands-on project management and was responsible for the implementation of several critical plant utilities at the Kiwi Dairies (now Fonterra), Hawera site during the mid 1990s, when time to complete was critical. These have been mentioned previously. He was also responsible for providing the project controls during the construction phase of the Martha Mine Expansion Project at Waihi, during the late 1990s. Andrew is also trained in Alternative Dispute Resolution principles of Mediation and Arbitration.

David is a thermal design specialist having worked for international companies such as International Combustion, Babcocks and John Thompson. He regularly provides troubleshooting advice on both small and large scale steam raising plants and provided valuable consulting services for the 60MW(e) Whareroa Cogeneration project at Fonterra's Hawera site.

He has also determined the cause of several boiler explosions and has provided specialist advice to lawyers and dispute mediators. David operates his own consulting practice in Sydney.

Tony Grey

Associate ME (Mech)

Tony is a specialist in Finite Element Analysis of mechanical components and structures. His substantial international experience includes design and structural optimisation with large international companies such as Ford European R & D and Altair Engineering.

He has access to technology that is able to analyse the most complex of engineering problems including explosive events, crash analysis and fatigue failure. Tony operates his own practice in Auckland.
